Lichen Hike : day 9

This was such a special morning for me. One of the colors I was drawn to for my rug design was this warm bold orange. Demetrio uses a Usnea lichen for this that grows in ABUNDANCE up in the mountains not too far from where we were. It’s a routine trek he takes up there to collect the lichen. I’ve collected a bit of usnea lichen here in Maine & California but I haven’t seen it grow like this. I also haven’t used it for dyeing yet.

Just driving to a different area with new landscape to look at was a treat in itself. It was pretty early morning and we got to experience the cool mountain air. The following day we dyed with the lichen šŸ§”
